Botanical garden reconstruction
A charity project to reconstruct the main botanical garden in Almaty was completed in 2020. The goal of the project is to carefully restore the garden while preserving the integrity and distinctive character of its territory, modernizing the infrastructure and increasing the green fund.
174,300 new plants were planted in the Botanical Garden – more than 1,300 trees, 40 thousand bushes, 130 thousand cereals and perennials, 3 thousand roses, including rare species and exclusive varieties.
The main task of providing water for plants was solved. Two new artesian wells were drilled, a water intake from the Kerenkulak River with an inflow of 600 cubic meters of water per day was extended along a 13-kilometer irrigation network. Drip irrigation and automatic watering systems were laid.
Three new entrance pavilions were erected in the garden to enter from Timiryazev Street, from “Atakent” and from Al-Farabi Avenue. They are equipped with electronic ticketing systems, souvenir shops, and toilets. A “dry” fountain and a pond with aquatic plants appeared in the northern parterre. In the southern part of the garden, a new parterre with three ponds, a pergola, and a field of mixed grasses, maple, linden, and pine alleys was created on the site of a waste land.
Roads with a total area of over 50 thousand square meters were renovated throughout the territory, ramps were built, tactile paths were laid, 250 new benches, 1,500 low-level lighting lamps, and 130 CCTV cameras were installed. Navigation signs, information boards, and a mobile application with a guide to the plant collections were introduced.
